As
many of you know, I was a big fan of Quake I. As much as I
sort of forced myself to play the game in the beginning, once
I passed the stages of not getting motion sickness after about
two weeks of playing Quake, I did much better. My main
problems was how I would get with the lava and water in the
game. This may sound silly but I would actually get really hot
when I went into the lava rooms on a level. Then when I jumped
in water, I would hold my breath because it really seemed like
I would drown. Back then I would get so into games, they
seemed very real to me. I think most of the motion sickness
was because I played online with a slow modem, and my system
wasn't that nice to play the game. I also didn't have a real
3d card at the time so you know how bad that would be. ;)
My
Conclusions
To get to my point here... someone brought to my attention
that his girlfriend had asked him where all of the Q3 Female
gamers went to. They sort of just seemed to disappear since
the Quake 2 days. I honestly never really thought about it
until he said this. I haven't seen as many Quake 3
Female Fanatics as I recall seeing in Quake 2. Where did all
of the love and excitement for Quake III Arena go in these
girl's hearts? Here are some of my conclusions since I feel
Quake III Arena simply rocks!
1)
Some (but not all) girls aren't as familiar with computer
technical things as about 90% of male gamers are... I mean, I
know how I started as an online Gamer... I had my brother (DarkViper)
tweak, fix, tell me what to do, answer anyone's questions
about my computer. I even had no idea what was inside of it at
the time. All I knew is that I was able to work on it, play on
it, and when it did something strange I called my brother. I
feel some of these girls may or may not be technical about
computers or they just simply can't buy a new computer with
that extra money right now. So without a computer that runs
Quake III Arena smoothly, they give up from those hours of
trying to get the game working right on their computer.
2)
Maybe they fell in love with Quake 2 and never really
tried to fall in love with Quake I? Some times a person in
general can fall in love or get addicted to a game. This will
make it hard for them to get as attached to a sequel or new
game if there are too many changes.
I know this from
personal experience from being so attached to Quake I. I just
never really could get into Quake 2 as much as I tried. The
female player model in Quake 2 was the only real thing that
was appealing to me. Other than that, I loved Quake I with a
passion.
3)
They may have found a love for another game all
together. Some of my own female gamer friends have moved on to
role playing games so they never really gave Quake III Arena
the time of day.
Female
Gamer IRC Channels
Most of you have seen me hanging out in the Q3W IRC Chat.
Although that is generally open all day long, I also have
another channel open at IRC.enterthegame.com. I have been
hanging out in that IRC way before Q3W's IRC server opened,
and ever since all of my buddies from the Xtreme Prejudice
Clan moved to their channel to that server. It's been quite a
long time now that I think about it. Before that, I always
would hang out in IRC.efnet.com #xp.
On the Enterthegame.com
IRC server, I idle in about ten (10) channels. Three (3) of
them are female gamer related: #LQMS, #QGirlz and
#Goddesses-r-us. I asked my buddy LQMS-Adrastea a few days ago
if she knew a lot of Q3 Gamers. She was her bubbly self as she
always is with a reply of, "Of Course I do!"
I then asked Adra if
there were more female Q2 Gamers compared to Q3 Gamers and she
even said there wasn't as many girls playing Quake III Arena
compared to Quake II.
What exactly does this
all mean? I can't comprehend why there isn't more female
gamers in Quake III Arena.
