Some
of the GX Staff
B2:
[GX Staff Comments]: B2, Extreme Gamer (Patrick Li) B2 is another Quake addict - now in
his first year at UC Davis, he boasts of his Quake prowess to impress the co-eds, with
varying results. B2 heads up testing for the GX Mod. He is very well known around Quake
circles, and spends countless hours IRC'ing on the Quake channels.
[Cali]: It was nice to finally meet Pat in person. He seemed very busy all 3 days so I
was only able to talk to him at different times all 3 days.
CalBear:
[GX Staff Comments]: CalBear, Extreme Gamer (Bob Colayco, aka Oski)CalBear is the
newest addition to the GX Staff and is a force to be reckoned with on Starcraft. Sometimes
known as "RTS-God," he is working his way up the Starcraft ladder as I type
this. He claims that he is still going to school, (at Cal Berkeley - duh!) but I see him
around here so much that I have my doubts. In his free time he harasses the stupid-looking
botanical mascots of local "farm" schools. He worked
on the original Starcraft Bible at Gamers Extreme.
[Cali]: CalBear. Bob was really busy throughout the weekend. He worked on posting the
PGL matches at the Gamers Extreme site along with working on the PGL site. He kept the
Gamers Extreme viewers in tune for all of the StarCraft matches.
Cross:
[GX Staff Comments]: Cross, Chief Extremist (Lyle Fong, aka Wumpuss). Cross is an old
hand at games. Seemingly born with a keyboard in his hands, he is most comfortable in
front of the screen, checking graphics and perfecting a web design (when we can pry him
away from Starcraft...). Lyle's background is in Computer Science at UC Berkeley, and with
his knowledge of ASP's, SQL, and PERL, he makes an excellent Quake player.
[Cali]: Lyle 'Cross' Fong Dennis 'Thresh' Fong's older brother. Lyle was a.k.a.
D10-Cross of clan DeathRow. Cross is also XP-Pookie's boyfriend. He has also been a good
buddy of mine since Patrick 'B2' Li introduced me to him last year on ICQ to report news
for GX Gamers eXtreme when the new news sites were finished. Cross was like how he is on
the net. He always has a lending ear to anything you have to say. I really think Cross and
Pookie are a really cute couple.
Faultine:
[GX Staff Comments]: Faultline, Marketing Extremist (Peter Kim, aka Flap). Faultline is
the talker. Despite his recent spate of Java programming, Pete is only happy when his lips
are flapping. He is a hard-drinkin', dip-chewin', butt-kickin', Acura-drivin',
cig-smokin', dorm-emptyin', bar-clearin', CEO-shmoozin'... nice guy.
[Cali]: Peter 'Faultline' Kim. Oh my... I almost said something good about Pete, but I
just remembered I saw the above about him on the staff page. Hmm? Hey who said that above
about Pete? :( Hrmph!! j/k :)
No, Pete a.k.a. Faultline is one of the funniest guys of the GX Staff, actually if they
had a vote there at the GX Staff he would definitely get my vote for the one that has the
"Most Sense of Humor" because he made me laugh a lot. Hehe :)
Nemesis & Mike:
[Cali]: Nemesis is another gaming news reporter of GX Gamers eXtreme and I was able to
talk to him every day at the PGL along with Mike. Nemesis and Mike always seemed to remind
me of each other. It could be because I met them both at the same time at the GX office.
They were both really cool. If I remember right, I think Mike taught me about some of the
StarCraft units during some of the matches held at the PGL. I know that Nemisis plays the
game as well.
Pookie:
[GX Staff comments]: Extreme Gamer. Pookie, one of the most fearsome female Quakers on
the planet, helps out with our HTML coding and contributes columns with a uniquely
feminine perspective.
[Cali]: Christina 'Pookie' Chan a.k.a. XP-Pookie. Shhh... Pookie is also a.k.a.
XP-CaliGirl2, my twin sister, (right Pookie? Hehe.) I really enjoyed meeting Pookie in
person. Pookie and I would joke around about being twins sisters only she is
a lot better
at playing Quake when we play in a Quake DM team game. It would sometimes confuse the guys
but it was fun to laugh about it. They really couldn't tell the difference because we both
acted the same. But she is from California too. I have enjoyed having fun in the Quake DM
team games along with the IRC channel with Pookie. We were unable to meet each other in
person at the XPCON II. But at the PGL Tournament I was finally able to meet my twin
sister. :) It was nice having dinners with her and her boyfriend Cross along with many
other of our friends. Although we would always talk in IRC about cooking each other
dinners someday when we were able to finally meet each other in person. I had originally
met (my twin sister XP-CaliGirl2) Pookie in a TetraNet game last year before she
first became a member of clan XP.
Reagon Youth:
[GX Staff Comments]: Smite, Extreme Artist (John Joh, aka Reagan Yoot, UziSuicide)
John's creative talent is responsible for all these beautiful graphics. When he isn't
toying with Photoshop, he's banging away on his drums, attempting to lower his neighbors'
property values.
[Cali]: John a.k.a Reagon Youth. I didn't get a chance to talk to John much, but he
seems to be a really nice guy too.
Spear
[GX Staff Comments]: Spear, Industry Extremist (Kenneth Hwang, aka KingOZerg). Kenn
oversees the GX News and industry insight. He has played way too many games all of his
life, and can't believe this passes as work. Kenn joined Thresh at the Red Annihilation
tournament, and is well known in Quake circles. Kenn wonders about his parents' wish for
him to go into Molecular Cell Biology, and hopes they don't find out he works here. (Mr.
and Mrs. Hwang, this is a different Kenn. Don't worry.)
[Cali]: Kenn 'Spear' Hwang was a.k.a. D5-Spear of DeathRow. It was really
nice to see Kenn. He let me play on his computer on the last night I was there at the GX
Office to play Half-life. The Half-life game was a lot of fun to play. Kenn a.k.a. Spear
and Dennis a.k.a. Thresh are also now reporting hardware and gaming news at Thresh's Firing Squad an Affiliated
site of GX Network.
Thresh:
[GX Staff Comments]: Thresh, Extreme Gamer. Thresh whoops everyone. Helping the rest of
us to stay humble, he regularly whoops us even when we team up on him. As he drives his
Ferrari around and plays Quake for a living, I can't help but feel sorry for him, leading
such an embittered, stressful life. Poor guy. You just can't beat the info in his
Quake and Quake II bibles.
[Cali]: Dennis 'Thresh' Fong (D11-Thresh of clan DeathRow). Dennis has a really
nice column he would update at Gamers extreme called Thresh's FrontLine. It may be
discontinued according to the last update in the Thresh's FrontLine column and he now has
another new site Dennis a.k.a. Thresh and Kenn
(Spear) are also now reporting hardware and gaming news at Thresh's Firing Squad an Affiliated
site of GX Network.
I also had the opportunity at the PGL to meet Dennis in person along with Alice his
girlfriend. These two are such a cute couple. Just seeing them both with each other can
bring a smile. Alice is such a sweet pretty girl. One thing I noticed that was different
seeing Dennis in person was, he was much more handsome than his pictures actually show on
the net. He seemed to have the same personality as he is on the net. He was an extremely
busy man throughout the 3 days but he always seemed to be able to smile and acknowledge
people around him. Alice also wrote about their trip to London, England on
Thresh's Frontline Column
on October 21st, which is also an enjoyable article to read.
Wemmick:
[GX Staff Comments]: Wemmick, Extreme Editor (Joel Downs, aka Buttmunch,
Eulogy). Wemmick tries to make sure his merry band of gamers gets some work done, and
occasionally succeeds. His Mechanical Engineering degree (also from UC Berkeley - go
Bears!) has come in very useful, as he has been recognized as the official GX
"Stapler-Reloader." Mom is so proud. Wemmick is a closet Nascar 2 player, but
can usually be found playing Q2.
[Cali]: Joel 'Wemmick' Downs. Lyle a.k.a. Cross had introduced me to Joel
by ICQ and Lyle told me I would be working with Joel to report the news on the new GX
gaming news sites. GX had to a point another type of system on editing their gaming news.
Joel worked with me very patiently and I am now on my own editing the news at GX. Joel is
still very helpful if there is anything I do need help on and he has also became another
friend of mine too. Joel was as great as he has been since I first met him. He helped me
so much throughout the 3 days and even took out his own time to take me on a tour to San
Francisco, which was really cool because I haven't ever been to San Francisco until those
3 days at the PGL event. It was nice to finally shake his hand in person. Thank you Joel.
:)
Joel a.k.a. Wemmick left to Las Vegas for the Comdex after the PGL
Tournament and has recently reported his trip on his column at GX called
Wemmick's Temporary Insanity.
He will also have his pictures of the PGL hopefully upload to view soon too.
Meeting Some of the GX Staff
Besides the enjoyment of meeting some of the GX Staff above in person at
the GX Office, I also enjoyed meeting some of them at the PGL Tournament at Club-i.
More Friends
I have also known most of my other friends below from playing Quake and
Quake II on Mplayer.com, QuakeWorld,
and/or NetQuake. I have listed them by clans. A lot of my brother DarkViper's and my
friends below are members of Mplayer.com and some of them also have profiles at CGN Cali Girl News. Some of their
profiles and interviews are at this time being updated, which will also be easier to view,
and/or some of them are new ones that are still currently in the process of being done.
Clan 311
Kornelia
311-Kornelia a.k.a. FF-Kornelia of the Femme Fatale Team
for the PGL Tournaments. Kornelia was very pretty in person. She has some very pretty blue
eyes and a really cool accent. I have also had the privilege to play team games with
Kornelia and Pookie. Kornelia was also the 1st place winner of Mplayer's Soldier of
Fortune, Inc. After four weeks of grueling combat ... so watch out guys when you're
playing Quake DM on Mplayer.com because Kornelia is definitely an excellent Quake player.
But Kornelia is really an enjoyable fun player to play along with being a real privilege
to play her in a Quake DM game too. :)
Clan Capitol
Cronus
cK-Cronus: I met Cronus on Friday through Wemmick. Cronus was really cool.
On the last day I was able to take a group picture of cK-Cronus, cK-Apocalypse, cK-Krave
and cK-Wilder. The group picture is really cute, they are next to a BMW car. Clan Kapitol
guys were really cool guys.
Clan Gib
Gunpwdr
CGIB-Gunpwdr. I met Gunpwdr briefly. He seemed to be very nice. I took a
picture of him, CGIB-Lord Jim, CGIB-Havox and CGIB-RonBob. Clan Gib seemed to be very nice
guys.
DeathRow Inmates
B2
D2-B2 a.k.a. GXB2... Please check out the message on the GX Staff above.
Cross (Executed)
Cross was a.k.a. D10-Cross a.k.a. GXCross... Please check out the message on the GX
Staff above.
Da5id
D15-Da5id was a.k.a. Da5id-Post. I was able to see my friend Dayvid again at the PGL. I
had previously met him in person at the XPCon2. I
originally met Dayvid through D13-Unholy when he was a.k.a. XP-Unholy in 1997 on ICQ.
But... oh my... Da5id and Unholy along with D4-Orion and a few others tried to crash the
XPCon2? Oh my... But it was really nice to be able to meet Dayvid in person on the first
night of the XPCon2. Dayvid was as sweet and handsome as he always has been. He is
also a super talented guy in graphic designing too.
Frick
D9-Frick was a.k.a LGD-Frick. It was also nice to meet Wes in person. Pat a.k.a. B2 had
introduced me to Wes through ICQ when some of the DeathRow were in a tournament in Sweden.
Wes is a really nice and smiley guy. Frick also did great in all of the PGL Quake Team
matches.
Geiger
D6-Geiger was a.k.a. XP-Geiger. Geiger saw Elvis in the back alley of Club-I... but I
missed it. :( I don't know the whole story but he said that it had to do with some German
Shepherd puppies. <g> :) Geiger is a great guy in person. I have talked to him many
times in the XP IRC but seeing him in person was so much better. He really has a great
personality and can make anyone laugh from the things he says. He also has the cutest
accent. I may try to remember again to ask him what type it was though. It wasn't to
noticeable but on certain words he said, it was really cute from my point of view. The
only problem was, when I went to leave on the first night (Thursday), I happened to bump
into him and I thought he was Gollum with glasses and a goatee. Shaking his hand I said,
"Hi, I have heard of you but I haven't actually met you." While Spear, Wemmick
and the rest around us were talking with him, I noticed that Wemmick said something and
said Geiger to him. I then said, "Wait! You aren't Geiger are you?" He said,
"Yeah, I am." I said, " Oohhhhh Man." hehehehe. He said,
"What?" I then told him that I thought he was Gollum and that is why I didn't
felt I didnt know him that well. Everyone laughed and I was laughing too. It was pretty
funny. :)
Handiman
Handiman now a.k.a. D12-HandiMan is really cool. He was constantly playing Quake in the
back with the others in the player area. After the final match
with clan Deathrow 115 and Clan Gib 59 was over, Thresh and crew made an announcement that
Handiman was inducted into Deathrow.
Orion
D4-Orion was a.k.a. XP-s1nist3r . My brother DarkViper and I had the pleasure to meet
him when he came to visit us before the XP-Con2 and the PGL Tournament. We really enjoyed
him visiting with us along with going to lunch with him. He always seems to shine his
handsome smile around and he does have some really pretty eyes. I was able to talk to him
many times throughout the weekend at the PGL. He is such a funny and cool buddy to talk
to.
Reptile
D8-Reptile was a.k.a. Reptile-Post. I also call Jim, Tarzan. Jim jokes around with me
whenever he has time to on ICQ and in IRC. It was really nice to meet him also in person.
The first
Quake 1 match on Friday was a disappointment when he played with his Deathrow clan
mates. I was hoping he did much better, but he still did great to me. Unholy ended up
taking his place for the second match that day. On Saturday, he was rocking the game with
his Reptile sneaky Quake talent. It was so great to finally meet Tarzan after this whole
time. He will always be my Tarzan. :)
Spear (Executed)
Spear was a.k.a D5-Spear a.k.a GXSpear. Please check out the message on the GX Staff
above.
Thresh
D11-Thresh was LGD-Thresh. a.k.a GXThresh. Please check out the message on the GX Staff
above.
Unholy
D13-Unholy was a.k.a. XP-Unholy. Jason seemed a lot more shy in person than he is on
the net. We were able to talk briefly about old times. No matter what though, he has
always been a great guy to me in the past along with being a very kind person.
But... there are still a few members that weren't at the PGL Tournament such as;
D3-LittleDragon a.k.a. XP-LittleDragon and D7-Twistedkiller was a.k.a.
XP-Twistedkiller.
K9
Alcazar
K9-Alcazar. I had heard of Alcazar before from K9-Bitter and LA-Peace of Mplayer but I
hadn't met him until I met him in person at the PGL. It was also nice to not only meet him
but to meet him also in person at the same time. He wasn't as arrogant as what I have been
told by some other Quake players. He is said to have challenged Thresh many times. Meeting
Alcazar in person showed me that he loves the game and challenging people is a game as
well. He was also a spokesman for the Quake 2 PGL Matches throughout the 3 days along with
K9-Cleaner and Rasta. One of the noticeable matches that He and K9-Cleaner announced were
the match between Makaveli and
Night as well as the final match
between Thresh [43] and Immortal [0].
Bitter
K9-Bitter (was Exlax-Bitter), originally known as Bitterboy. I met Bitter a
little while after Megahertz on Mplayer. K9-Bitter announced some announcements in the
beginning of the PGL on Thursday and for the rest of the weekend he worked hard on giving
everyone their prizes from the giveaway box. It was really nice to also see him again.
Cleaner
K9-Cleaner. Cleaner was a great spokesman through out the PGL Events. He spoke
for the exhibition matches in Quake 2 and one exhibition StarCraft match with the
developer of StarCraft. Cleaner had a sports voice as if you were watching a Hockey or
Baseball game. He kept you on your toes and when something in the game made him excited,
you knew it from his tone and the "Whoa! Did you see that!" He also was great at
teaching a person who didn't know that much about the game Quake2 by giving hints on what
the player should of done to not be hit like that or what the player should do to get out
of a predicament and so forth. Having him speak for most of the Quake 2 matches was great.
Megahertz
K9-Megahertz (was Exlax-Mhz). It was nice to finally meet Megahertz in person. I
originally knew Megahertz from Mplayer. He was known as Exlax-Mhz at the time. Some of you
that were Quake players on Mplayer may remember Megahertz, he won one of the big
tournaments on Mplayer in the Quake DM division. Mega and I used to also take turns
singing in the Exlax clan room on the microphone among the other Exlax clan members and
other friends which was a lot of fun last year when he was residing at the time in
Tennessee. K9-Masta a.k.a. Mastakiller mentioned to me on Saturday that Megahertz was
accepted in the K9 clan on Friday night. Congrats Mega. :)
Masta
K9-Masta a.k.a. Mastakiller. Mastakilla did great in the matches he played. He was a
really cool guy to meet. It was nice to meet Masta for the first time and in person.
Power Rangers
Dmann
Dmann was a bit different then how he is on the net. He seemed pretty busy. During just
about every Quake 1 Team Tournament if he was killed he would either bang on the table or
yell at the other team saying, "OH! You are SO LUCKY!" It was nice to meet him
in person.
XBN
Saiyan
Chibbs a.k.a. XBN-Saiyan went to the PGL as well. I have played with him many Quake
games on Mplayer in the past. Although I wasn't able to meet Chibbs in person due to me
not knowing what he looked like or if he was going to the PGL for sure. He is a really
nice guy, I wish I could of met him in person.
Xtreme Prejudice
Chael
XP-Chael. Chael has also been a friend of my brother, XP-DarkViper and I. I first met
Chael when he came down to visit my brother and I last Easter with our other friend
XP-Quazi-Modem and were able to go with them out to dinner along with XP-BloodyRanger.
Chael is such a great guy. He always is so considerate for others. The only thing I sort
of got upset about him was, he wouldn't share the Mocha with me. I brought him a separate
cup to share but he didn't want any at the time. :( It was great to be able to talk to him
in person again. :)
Pipe
XP-Pipe. Pipe has also been a friend of mine. He was unable to make it to the XPCON II
but it was really nice to finally meet him in person too. I originally met Pipe in the XP
IRC Channel when he lived in New York.It was nice to see Jeremy in person. He has always
been really cool. He has moved from New York to San Francisco, California. I hope
everything goes well on all he does. :)
Pookie
XP-Pookie a.k.a. FF-Pookie a.k.a. GX-Pookie. Please check out the message on the GX
Staff above.
More Attendees
Immortal
Immortal. Kurt was really cool to meet in person. I wasn't able to talk to him when he
was at the XPCon II so it was nice to meet him at the PGL Finals. He played really well in
all of the matches except in the final matches with Thresh.
John Carmack
John Carmack, Owner / Lead Programmer of id Software was busy as ever, having people
all around while he talked. There was one time where he was in the back talking to many
Gamers and Attendees and his name was called on the microphone to come up for his
Questions and Answering session. He didn't notice he was being called because he was
talking to everyone who was circled around him. I then look over and the whole crowds,
which once looked like they were compact like a sardine can opened with a nice and wide
walkway for him to come through. He was still talking to everyone in his little circle of
people. His wife had to come all the way to the back of the place, grab his arm and tell
him that she was would save his place with these people he was talking to for later. She
then led him through the crowd and on to the platform.
Jinxx
I have known Jinxx on Mplayer for quite a long time now. He went to the PGL
event but I wasn't able to meet him in person. I am pretty disappointed in not being able
to meet him. Maybe sometime soon, right Josh? :) I also wanted to be able to go to the
Mplayer.com and meet Cajun Landing along with the rest of the Mplayer.com crew. But, due
to me not knowing sooner about my trip along with the PGL I wasn't able to go there this
time but hopefully soon. :)
Lady Rose
Lady Rose: Although I didn't
get to talk to her in person, I did see her throughout the weekend at the PGL finals. She
was more with the StarCraft Attendees. She also released a nice
PGL Scrapbook from a StarCraft point
of view.
Lisa
Lisa is also a friend of Kornelia's. I hadn't originally met her before but I have seen
a lot of pictures with her and Kornelia since last year on the net. Lisa was cool to meet
in person. She looked prettier in person as well. When you look at her and Kornelia, they
almost look like sisters. :)
Lord-187
Lord-187 came from Florida to the PGL event. He played in the Quake 2 bracket. I wasn't
actually able to shake his hand personally but he seemed to be a cool guy.
Madfraga
Madfraga. I have to mention Tyler. I saw him at the PGL talking to Pookie but I didn't
get to really meet him in person. We have talked a lot since then in IRC. He is a really
nice guy.
Makeveli
Makeveli played and won a match at the PGL against Night from Sweden. Although we didn't get to talk that much
again like at the XPCON II. Victor is a really great guy and I also enjoy talking to him
too on the IRC Channel.
Night
Night flew from
Sweden to make it to the PGL Finals. Night and Makaveli played a
Quake 2 DM
Match on one of the days. He also played a match against
Billox from the United Kingdom. I talked to him for a while about how different the
United States was compared to Sweden. He told me that the houses aren't that tall and so
close together in Sweden like they are in San Francisco. I told him that San Francisco was
known for close, grouped up houses. It was really nice to talk to him about the gaming
news sites in Sweden as well as other things we talked about. He was really a nice guy and
a pleasure to meet.
Rasta
Rasta was a great spokesman for the PGL finals in most of the Quake 1 Teams and Quake2
games. He also assisted (in a much lesser capacity) with Soso and StarCraft until Bill
Roper of Blizzard stepped in to his Q & A session. He kept us up to date on match
scores and most of the moves that was happening throughout the games with a nice loud and
clear voice. He did a great job on being responsible for coordinating and MC'ing the
awards ceremony as well. It was great to meet him, he is a great guy.
Stephen:
I met Stephen for the first time on Saturday, the third day and final day at the PGL
Finals. He met all of us really early at the GX office to go to the Subway that day.
Stephen works for Mindscape, which is
affiliated to Strategic Simulations Inc.
He was a really nice guy.
