Gunpwdr Interview:
Quake Legend

Nick Name: Gunpwder
Real Name:
Don La

Background:  Being that Gunpwder lived in the Washington, DC area... he participated in DC-Con 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.  He won the finals at DC2 for team and 1 on 1.  Other than that, he took 2nd place team finish at the PGL finals and a top 10 finish at Quakecon 2 (I think it's 2) in the 1 on 1 competition.

Question 1: Can you explain your 'current activity' in the gaming community? What are the games you have enjoyed since you stopped playing Quake 1?  Have you entered any other non-related Quake 1 events?

Answer: For all intents and purposes, my "professional" gaming career ended with the 1998 PGL team finals in San Francisco. Since then, I've indulged in the excesses of Everquest, Diablo 2, and a little bit of Quake 3 (when it first came out).  As far as games I play now, I have little time between work and planning a wedding... but I do find time to play a little Counterstrike each day.

Question 2:  In what way do you feel the Quake community has changed since Quake III Arena came out last year?

Answer: I'm not familiar with the landscape of the Quake community at this time, but I do believe that the original Quake 1 community became fragmented when no one FPS game was able to cement itself as the de facto standard for competitive gaming.

Question 3:  Have you had a chance to check the Team Arena Demo yet? If so, what do you enjoy the most about it?

Answer: I have not taken the time to check it out.

Question 4: With id Software's new project being focused on Doom, is there any features you would like this upcoming game to include?

Answer: Given that the only id Software game I've enjoyed this year (or since August 1996) is Quake 1, I'd like to see a return to the old Quake 1 netcode, weapons, and maps.  You can apply all the latest 3D technology to it and call it Doom 2000 if you'd like ;)

Question 5: What gamer besides yourself do you feel comes to mind as one of the most respected gamers? This would be someone who you felt is respected not only
for his gaming skills (any game) but for his/her attitude.

Answer: In the time I played competitively, there is no question that Thresh garnered the most respect and attention from fellow gamers... myself included.  As for today's Q3 players, I'm not familiar enough with them to comment on it.
