Megahertz Interview:
Quake Legend

Nick Name: Megahertz
Real Name: Gerry Filimonov
Background: Megahertz was a very well known gamer on TEN and Mplayer.com services.

Question 1: Can you explain your 'current activity' in the gaming community? What are the games you have enjoyed since you stopped playing Quake 1?  Have you entered any other non-related Quake 1 events?

Answer: I am mostly playing Everquest now.  I haven't played quake nearly as much as I did when Quake1 was the king. Quake 2 was pretty fun, and I did play it for a while but didnt find it nearly as enjoyable as Quake1. I guess one of the main reasons I liked Q2 over Q1 was the maps. The DM maps that came with Q2 just weren't up to par in terms of gameplay with the ones from Q1.

As for Q3, CTF is kinda fun but again the maps in Q3 just aren't all that great. I haven't really entered any tournaments lately, it's hard to get good a game that you don't believe in I guess. Although I do cheer my clan Team Canine on at events.

Question 2:  In what way do you feel the Quake community has changed since Quake III Arena came out last year?

Answer:  I can definitely say that the competition has gotten harder. Not really at the top levels, but mainly in the levels below that. With the recent boom in computing power and the fact that nowadays more and more people are on the internet, there's a lot more players out there who are great players. But, some still fall short of being good enough to go Professional. In time and with practice some of them will move into the bracket of top tier players. I've seen this happen quite a few times already. Alot of the people I played in Quake1 and Quake2 who have been in the community for a while have really honed their skills and become seriously good.

Vise is one player that comes to mind. I remember hanging with him on TEN back in the day. He was a good player back then, but he's gotten so much better now. Hehe. Wow, writing this is starting to bring back some memories.

Question 3:  Have you had a chance to check the Team Arena Demo yet? If so, what do you enjoy the most about it?

Answer:  I bought the game and tried to install it but it wouldn't install. From time to time I format my computer, just too keep everything neat and tidy and smoothly running. Part of this involves me backing up stuff sometimes. Games like Quake 3 I can get away with copying back and forth between partitions and still be able to play the game, but it seems the Q3A: Team Arena installer didn't like this for some reason.

I haven't had time to actually fiddle with it and get it running, but I did see my roommate running around a few of the maps. Some of the older CTF maps had some much needed changes/additions made to them. Then some of the newer maps look pretty cool, but I really could care less how a level looks, I'm more interested in how they play. Cool graphics are nice, but only make up a small part of the equation.

Question 4: With id Software's new project being focused on Doom, is there any features you would like this upcoming game to include?

Answer: I'm sure it'll have some cool stuff in it. Most of that will be things that I never would have imagined in a FPS type game. I understand that id Software's new project is gonna be more of a Single player type game with multiplayer added as an after thought. Which could be a good thing.

One of the things I'd like to see in it is actually a lack of something. The older games by id Software kinda had gameplay description of "find the key and find the exit." That really starts to get boring after a while, especially when there are 30+ levels in the game. What I would really like to see id Software try to get away from this in the design of their next project. Something that really makes the player think instead of just running through the game blasting the heck out of everything only to push a button and exit the level. And more interactivity in the game, like be able to destroy, push, and use just about everything that you see in the game.

A good storyline would be great as well. Not just the same old "You're a marine in an alien infested base trying to get the heck outta there." story line. I'm talking something really involving and thought out, something with the depth of storylines for the Final Fantasy series of game. Those games had some great, and I do mean GREAT storylines.

Question 5: What gamer besides yourself do you feel comes to mind as one of the most respected gamers? This would be someone who you felt is respected not only for his gaming skills (any game) but for his/her attitude.

Answer:  Unholy. I've known Jason since the early Quake1 days. I remember playing with him on TEN back in the day. Him and I were pretty even as far as skill goes, he might have been just slightly better, but that didn't last long. He got good real fast. I always kind of looked up to him I guess. Everybody was always talking about how good he was. It wasn't like I was jealous or anything (ok, maybe a little =) ). I just wanted to be that good. He kind of set a goal for me and made me play and practice and try to get my skills up. I did move closer to that goal, although I don't think I ever did reach it.

Jason and I played a few 1on1's here and there and I think I did pretty fair against him then. I recall one game the score was 16-9 where we I think we played DM6, hard to say though, its been quite a long time.

Aside from Quake, Jason is an all around cool guy. Occasionally he'll come over with some of the Clan 9 guys and hang out. It's always fun to hang out with people you've known in the quake community forever and just reminisce about the old days, who was good, who sucked, and all that sorts of good stuff. =)
