Mirage Interview:
Q3 Gamer Pro

Nick Name:  Mirage
Real Name:
Neal Thompson

Background: Mirage's background as a professional gamer began in Quakeworld. He traveled to many countries to play in 1on1 and Team Deathmatch. Back then he was active in Europe as a QW player from Jun99-Dec99. Since then he has been more recently traveling overseas to play in other Quake III Arena competitions.

Competitions:

  • Getting ready to play in CPL Europe and CPL America
  • First Place: AfterShock Q3 RA3 (NZ/AU)
  • First Place: Impact-Extreme Q3 1on1 (China)
  • Third Place: AU-Battletop Q3 1on1 (Australia)
  • First Place: QuakeStock 2 Q3 CTF (New Zealand)
  • Top 32: RazerCPL Dallas Q3 1on1 (United States - International Tournament)
  • First Place: Bloodrain 5 Q3 CTF (New Zealand)

Questions 1: What gamer besides yourself do you feel comes to mind as one of the most respected gamers? This would be someone who you felt is respected not only for his gaming skills but for his/her attitude.

Answer: I respect Sujoy the most for his skill and attitude. He portrays a very positive image to the media and public about gaming as a professional sport. With more gamers such as him, we will see the profile of gaming rise.

Questions 2: In what way do you feel the Quake community has changed since Quake III Arena came out last year?

Answer: The Quake community has come back together from the fractured community that was Q1 and Q2. We have also seen many new players come onto the scene. Its just a pity that Q3A isn't half as good as QW

Questions 3: Have you had a chance to check the Team Arena Demo yet? If so, what do you enjoy the most about it?

Answer: I haven't bothered to download it.

Questions 4: With id Software's new project being focused on Doom, is there any features you would like this upcoming game to include?

Answer: I hope Doom 3 has much faster game play which encourages attacking. Alot of air control would help this. Perhaps Doom 3 could be like the Challenge Promode mod of Quake III Arena.

  • chiQ: I've only met Mirage a couple of times at LANs, but I talk to him on icq and he's a nice guy. NZ is a very small place, so for us to produce a player who can play so well, and even a clan like his (Dust to Dust - D2D) that recently beat the Aussies in a transtasman clan RA3 comp, is something of a miracle. Mirage suffers from a mild case of tall poppy syndrome here, and gets a lot of ribbing for his bids to get to overseas events, but in general the NZ scene is proud to own him.

  • Ard Righ: I've met Mirage in person, chat with him a fair bit on ICQ, IRC, etc... and he's a good guy. Mirage gets a lot of crap from the locals (NZers) and the Ockers, but he's not as bad as people make him out to be. Sure, Mirage is a confident guy, and that can be taken as arrogance. Mirage has been around dueling since the QW days, taking a tour through the UK and Europe to get competition. Now he's moved onto Q3, and still ranking up towards the top of the tree.

  • [.HedbangR.]: Yeah Mirage is a really cool guy who helps people out heaps. I've only met him once, he's really cool always there giving people tips etc to improve there game. I've played him also on LAN (he was practicing his rail) and he is so accurate it isn't funny. He also comments on shots etc. He's the man. Nuff said.

  • -Statik: I only recall talking to him once in real life, at quakestock when playing Tekken 3 on the projector. I also recall him on the news trying to get sponsorship to fly to Aussie so he could win tickets to a CPL event in Dallas, Texas. He helped get the cash prizes for the q3 6v6 ctf comp at quakestock, which the clan he is in (d2d) won.
