Shadow Interview:
Q3W Team

Nick Name: Shadow
Real Name: John Roy
Birthday: March 31st

Background:  Shadow has played a part at Quake3world.com as one of the guys who helps us manage the judging on some of our contests. He's previously known for being in the Shadow Lords clan. They were a nice Quake III Arena clan that enjoyed playing a lot of Team Deathmatch games.

Questions 1: What do you enjoy most about the Holidays?

Answer: I enjoy spending the holidays with my friends and family.  The holidays are great because it is a time where people from all over can enjoy relaxation and spending time with loved ones.  It is a time of generosity and hope.  It is a time of love and comfort.  It is a time when we can be ourselves and show it to others :)

Questions 2:Can you explain your current activity in the gaming community? What are the games you have enjoyed since you stopped playing Quake 1?

Answer: I continued to play Quake 1 even after the release of Q2.  Quake2 is a great game, don't get me wrong, but the physics weren't quite right for me... I never really got in to it.  So I played a lot of QWCTF. When Quake3 finally hit the shelves, I had been playing the release candidates for a little while, so I kind of knew what to expect.  The physics were becoming more and more honed, and I started thinking about retiring Q1 to the archives, which I finally did after a video card upgrade that made Q1 colors too "strange" to play with the settings I used.  Been playing Q3A ever
since.  Every now and then, I like to delve into Baldur's Gate or a good role-playing game of that sort, but I still have to get my daily "Q3A" fix. ;)

Questions 3: In what way do you feel the Quake community has changed since Quake III Arena came out last year?

Answer: The community changed in quite a large way.  People either LOVED Q3A or hated it.  The hardcore Quake players either decided to do the Unreal Tournament thing or migrate to Q3A, or leave 1st person shooters all-together.  I think Q3A has made us grow a lot closer, since the expandability of the game seems almost limitless.  Although the majority of discussion and interest breakthroughs usually still begin at the LAN level, here in Q3A there isn't quite as much separation between those internet and LAN players, which certainly boosts the competition and caliber of players across the board.

Questions 4:

Answer: Took a look at the Team Arena demo.  I really like the game options and look of the game.  I'm not sure about the physics yet, but I'm sure that'll change over time, since it's still a demo right now.  I'll be first in line when it hits the shelves, that's for sure.  The focus on teamplay is finally reaching a state where organized matches might actually happen on the fly instead of having so many "individuals" out there trying to play teams.

Questions 5: With id Software's new project being focused on Doom, is there any features you would like this upcoming game to include?

Answer: Real speech!  It would be great to be able to talk to someone else in real-time, and have it work based on "proximity" (meaning, the louder you shout, the further out people can hear you).  This way, if the enemy is "spying", he or she can pick up what you are saying, and also, someone who is a half mile away can't hear you at all.  (Of course, headsets can always be available within the game...hmmm).  I'm definitely looking forward to the return of Doom :)

Questions 6: What gamer besides yourself do you feel comes to mind as one of the most respected gamers? This would be someone who you felt is respected not only for his gaming skills but for his/her attitude.

Answer: XP-CaliGirl.  I'm not trying to win any points here (heheh), but I have respected her abilities and attitude since I've known her (what, about a year or so now,  wow...time sure does fly).  I mean, she never "gives up" or throws in the towel, in the game or outside the game.  I recall some matches where she was in the negatives quite a bit, and laughing about it rather than getting frustrated...not giving up, but continuing to play to the best of her ability, and always for the team! I can also recall some times in the discussion forums where she's been nailed to the wall by rude players, just to stick to her guns and come back with intelligence and poise.  In the face of adversity, Jody's got it where it counts, and always keeps a positive attitude, and that is what I totally admire about her.

  • Cali Girl: Shadow is one of the sweetest, caring, talented gamers I have known out on the net. More recently he has helped us out in the Halloween Skin contest here at Quake3world.com. I look forward to any other contests he helps out as a judge for us.
