Unholy Interview:
Quake Legend

Nick Name: Unholy
Real Name: Jason Carlton

Question 1: First off, can you explain your current activity in the gaming community? What are the games you have enjoyed since you stopped playing Quake 1?

Answer:   Currently, I am playing Quake3 with some friends (ie: the ex clan 9 guys and a few of my old school buddies, makaveli and immortal). We just recently disbanded clan 9, but I'm sure something will be organized very soon and you will see us all actively gaming again ;)

Outside of the playing aspect, I have been working here and there on some projects that will, hopefully, help contribute to the competitive gaming industry.

I've played a lot of games since Quake1, the most notable of which would be Asheron's Call and DiabloII. I am currently playing a little bit of American McGee's Alice on the side, which has turned out to be a very enjoyable (and trippy) single player game.

I entered a few Quake2 tournaments while I was living the modem hood life for a year and a half and have also been involved in a handful of Quake3 team events.

Question 2:  Have you had a chance to check the Team Arena Demo yet?

Answer:    I have not yet had a chance to check out Team Arena. It's been a messy last couple of months...and just when things felt like they were getting organized, the psychotic holiday season of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years proceeded to throw everything out of balance again! I'll most likely mess around with it soon though.

Question 3:  In what way do you feel the Quake community has changed since Quake III Arena came out last year?

Answer:  Competitive gaming has been growing at an exponential rate since the good old days of Quake1. The community is larger than ever...we're starting to see the beginning of a truly worldwide community.

Consequently, I think the community has lost a little bit of the romance that it had back in the Quake1 days. But larger communities will always be more difficult to manage and I think it will just take some time, effort, and hard work to help give the community the organization and direction it now requires.

Question 4: With id Software's new project being focused on Doom, is there any features you would like this upcoming game to include?

Answer:   Nothing specific at this time. Hopefully we can collectively come up with some ideas though before the project is too far along.

It would be nice though to see some thought being put into integrating features in the game that would be conducive in encouraging the growth of recreational and competitive gaming.

Right now, professional gaming is in the stage where it needs to establish its validity to the mass media and sponsors. I think it would be wonderful to see ID contributing in helping to build an infrastructure to support the cause. Adding functionality that encouraged RECREATIONAL competitive gamers to become aware and involved (ideally) in the community would be a good start. The more people who know about gaming and can appreciate it, the better chance the 'professional' concept will fly.

Question 5: What gamer besides yourself do you feel comes to mind as one of the most respected gamers? This would be someone who you felt is respected not only for his gaming skills (any game) but for his/her attitude.

Answer:   I would have to say Jmaster from kOz. He's been getting his ass kicked for years but I still see him playing. That's dedication baby. :)  I'm just joking, Jason. :)

Seriously, there are a lot of people who spend a lot of time playing and contributing to the community. A lot of these people could be spending their time working in other industries making a lot more money, but they have a love for the concept of gaming.. .that should be commended.

As far as particular people who stick out in my mind? It's difficult to say. A lot of us gamers are starting to get all old and washed up. :) It takes a lot of faith and effort to stay involved and there are still a handful of the really old school guys out there who are contributing to the cause. People like Alcazar from Canine... they help keep the competitive community living. Also online tournament organizers, like the fellas who run the QIL. (Although they have a shitty way of dividing their teams up into divisions. :P)

Also people like Chael and Enigma from Xtreme Prejudice... those guys are shining lights as to what our community could be like if everyone were as kind and considerate as them.

You too Jody (Cali Girl), for all the hard work you've been putting into documenting some of the history of gaming through your personal bios, photo albums, and activities.

Hope everyone had a good Christmas and got a spicy kiss on New Years! Keep Fraggin ;)
